Feeling overwhelmed and -stimulated is — and not only since I became a mom — not new for me. I easily feel swamped, even if the chores that have to be done are not that energy and time consuming. Thinking about them and finding the right strategy certainly is.

Mental load is the weight of all the tasks, responsibilities, and decisions that we carry in our minds. It is the invisible, yet ever-present burden that can affect our productivity, relationships, and overall well-being. Usually, the term is used when it comes to “running a household”. But I think it can also be linked to working with content strategy.

As content strategists, we are often asked to take on multiple responsibilities. We are expected to organize, create, and manage content across multiple channels, while also ensuring that it aligns with the brand’s overall messaging and goals. We are also expected to keep up with the latest trends and best practices, while staying informed about our target audience’s needs and preferences.

However, this mental load can also be a powerful tool for content strategists. By understanding and managing our mental load, we can create more effective content that resonates with our audience and drives business results, as well as organize it in an efficient way.

Here are a few tips to help you manage your mental load as a content strategist:

  1. Prioritize your tasks: It can be overwhelming to have a long list of tasks and responsibilities. Prioritizing your tasks will help you focus on what’s most important and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  2. Break down complex tasks: Large projects can be daunting, but breaking them down into smaller, manageable tasks can make them feel more manageable.
  3. Take breaks: Taking regular breaks can help you recharge and refocus, giving you the energy you need to tackle your tasks with renewed energy.
  4. Stay organized: Keeping your tasks, deadlines, and notes organized will help you stay on top of everything and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  5. Communicate with your team: Collaborating with your team can help you share the mental load and ensure that everyone is on the same page.

By understanding and managing our mental load and prioritizing our tasks, breaking down complex tasks, taking breaks, staying organized, and communicating with our team, we can ensure that we are doing our best while also taking care of our mental health.
